Early life of Pema Lingpa
|
Pema Lingpa was born in 1445 in a small village of Chelwa Rithang in present day Tang in Bumthang to Dhendup Zangpo and Pema Dema. His father came from a family of Sumthrang choeje who followed the Nyingmapa lineage.
Pema Lingpa was above average children and showed his intelligence by building models of temples, stupas, religious thrones. He even wrote scripts on leaves. Even as a small boy he performed sacred dances, gave sermons and initiations.
At the age of 9 his grandfather started to train him in the art of Black smithy. Apart from his usual training as black smith he learnt weaving, wood and stone carving and soon became a trained craftsman. He received very little formal training in religion. He learnt all he could by studying on his own. He also possessed a remarkable talent for memorising long texts within a short time.
